A poor design can lead to an incident many years down the line, here we have a fairlead set in from the hull, the rust on the sheerstrake shows there has been plenty of chafe over the years. This would be less of an issue with wire ropes however with the towage industry now using dyneema ropes, such chafe points become an issue.
